O conto trata da inconstância da alma humana. O personagem principal, o Jacobina, encontra-se em um roda de cavalheiros, onde se discutem questões metafísicas. Além de grandes e belas ilustrações, a obra apresenta glossário com significado de palavras da época como, por exemplo: Casmurro, que quer dizer triste, muito sério, fechado em si mesmo. As páginas finais trazem também fotos antigas do Rio de Janeiro no século 19, que serviram de inspiração para o ilustrador. Ele informa que para realizar seu trabalho pesquisou fotografias da época e consultou livros de móveis e antigüidades do século 19. Há também uma página intitulada: sobre o projeto e as ilustrações da Coleção Machado de Assis, em que se explica o processo de criação e o seu objetivo, assim como uma página sobre “o ilustrador e seu processo de criação”.

The short story narrates inconstancy of the human soul. The main character, Jacobina, is at a gentlemen’s circle, where they debate metaphysical matters.
Besides the large and striking illustrations, the work presents a glossary with the meaning of words by the time the story was written, like, for example:”Casmurro” means sad, really serious, awkward. The last pages bring old pictures of Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century that inspired the illustrator. In order to carry out the research, he studied photos of the time as well as furniture and antique’s books of the nineteenth century.
In the book one may also find a page about the Project Machado de Assis Collection and the illustrations, where one will read about the project’s goals and the creation process used to make the illustrations contained in the four volumes.
