A antologia O rebelde e outros contos amazônicos reúne quatro narrativas: “O rebelde”, “A quadrilha de Jacó Patacho”, “O donativo do capitão Silvestre” e “Voluntário”. Os dois primeiros têm como tema a revolta popular que ficou conhecida como Cabanagem. Em “O donativo do capitão Silvestre”, há referências diretas à Questão Christie, o problema diplomático entre os governos brasileiro e britânico que ocorreu entre 1862 e 1865. Em “Voluntário”, Inglês de Sousa mostra a realidade amazônica na literatura, no período em que se faziam recrutamentos por causa da Guerra do Paraguai. Na segunda parte do livro, há um apêndice que relaciona os contos aos acontecimentos históricos citados.

The anthology The Rebel and other tales from the Amazon stitches together four narratives: “The rebel” (“O rebelde”), “Jaco Patacho’s Gang” (“A quadrilha de Jacó Patacho”), “Capitan Silvestre’s donative” (“O donativo do capitão Silvestre”) and “Volunteer” (“Voluntário”). The first two have as main theme the Cabanagem Brazilian Revolution. In “Capitan Silvestre’s donatives”, there is a reference to the Question Christie, the diplomatic question between the Brazilian and the British government that happened between 1862 and 1865.
In “Voluntary”, Inglês de Sousa shows Amazon reality in literature, in the period when people were being recruited to Paraguay War. In the second part of the book there is an appendix relating the short stories with the historical facts.
